Cancun and Riviera Maya on the road to reopening

As Mexico and the World make steady progress on the fight against Covid-19 we are getting closer to the day in which things return to normality. The Council of Touristic Promotion or Quintana Roo (CPTQ) has announced its plans to reopen the state of Quintana Roo at the beginning of June. The CPTQ announced during a press briefing that they are working on a special campaign to revive the tourism industry in the state to be launched at the end of May.

Dario Flota Ocampo, CPTQ’s director has confirmed that multiple airlines from the United States, Canada, and Europe have already confirmed their return to the Mexican Caribbean in the coming weeks. Amongst the airlines that have committed to service the state are Air Canada, Air Transat, Delta Airlines, Copa Airlines, Air Europa, Sunwing, Southwest and Aeroméxico. And even better yet, the return of the flights has prompted the reopening of the reservation systems of many of the more than 155 hotels that had remained closed for the last few weeks.

The plan to reopen the Mexican Caribbean also includes the return of the incredible theme parks and world-class attractions of the destination. During the last two weeks representatives of the local tourism industry have expressed their enthusiasm and commitment to work together along with the international community to bring back our beloved paradise in the fastest, safest way possible.

Health experts from around the world monitoring the Covid-19 pandemic estimate that cases in Mexico will peak around May 4 and that by June 12 Mexico will have seen 97% of its total cases. So even though the state of Quintana Roo, home of Cancún and the Riviera Maya, has maintained its campaign of “Paradise Can Wait, Please Stay Home” we can now see the light at the end of the tunnel. Starting in June you and your family will be able to visit us in paradise and enjoy the vacations that we all need after this experience.

Estimated opening dates of hotels according to official newsletters (June 1st, 2020)

Note: Despite the announcements of the hotels and their reopening calendars, it will be up to the government to grant permits to reopen the tourist activity. During the following days authorities will be evaluating whether the conditions are in place to meet these re-open dates.
