Today Monday June 8th brings the first day of the next step of the reopening of the Mexican Caribbean. Through the “Reactivating Quintana Roo” strategy the State Government has given the go-ahead to reopen 25% of Cancun’s hotels. 39 hotels in Cancun, one in Playa Mujeres and one in Puerto Morelos will reopen their doors today to receive their first guests in many months since all hotels had remained closed during the Covid-19 pandemic.
It is worth mentioning that these 41 hotels will only be able to operate with 30% of their rooms for now. Besides that, hotel chains with more than one hotel like Marriott, Grupo Palace, RIU, Real Inn, and Holiday Inn have only been allowed to reopen one hotel each.
22 of these 39 hotels in Cancun are located in the downtown and are serving mainly business travelers, convention goers or as temporary home for self-isolating health workers. The remaining 17 hotels are located in the Hotel Zone and focus on tourism. This has breathe new life into the Hotel Zone after the 3 quietest, loneliest months of its history.
As part of the reactivating Quintana Roo plan the authorities have implemented a filter at the 2.5 kilometer mark in the Hotel Zone to verify that only residents, workers, and tourists can access this area. Authorities are also monitoring public transport to make sure these rules are being followed. We recommend to always have an ID on you to avoid any misunderstandings.
While the reopening of our beloved destination is incredible news, we know that it does not mean the end of the fight against Covid-19. This is why the authorities continue to implement strict sanitary and hygiene measures like the use of face masks while at any public space. We know that all of this might sound overwhelming, but these measures are the reasons for which the Mexican Caribbean became one of only four places in the world, and the only in America to be awarded the Global Safety Stamp by the World Tourist and Travel Council which certifies us as a place that is safe to visit.
And this is how we are beginning anew. Little by little over the upcoming weeks and months the city will increase the amount of hotels and attractions open and when they open you should be the first to know. Check in with us frequently during the process of reopening to stay well informed so you can best plan your next vacation!
